WordPress comes in two different versions.
WordPress.com which is a quick and easy way to set up a website on WordPress’s servers for free and if you want to add anything like Plugins you need to pay for a monthly subscription. We will not be talking about that version.
WordPress.org is what Designers and Developers will download and install on your web hosting, with your domain name and that is what we are going to be focussing on in the videos.
I have set up a basic WordPress installation, this is exactly what it looks like out of the box and before we can do anything we will need to login.
More often than not your login for your admin area would be /wp-admin/ and you will be presented with the login screen.
Now, I have got some nifty software, which saves my login here, which is LastPass extension in Chrome and it has already populated my username and password.
Your Web Designer or Developer would provide you with your login details when they set this up for you.
And you should always have an Administrator account so that you can see everything that we are going to be talking about as well.
If I click login here this will take us to the dashboard.
This is your main administration homepage, off the very top of your Dashboard and across every page you will see the name of your website in the header area and this also provides a quick dropdown link, to enable you to visit the site and that will open – what we have just seen before which is – the front of your website.
You will also see the name of the person logged in, so that is me at the moment and here is a quick menu where I can edit my profile or log out.
When new or updated features are introduced into WordPress you will be shown some new pointer, little popups which you can click with a little “dismiss” link as well and you also get notified of any updates that are available, for the WordPress core to Plugins, Themes and translations which you can actually see I have got some here.
On most pages you will also see just beneath the username there is a small tabbed link here and if you click on Screen Options it actually gives you some more options to configure how you can see this space.
You can turn things on and off in this particular Dashboard screen.
There is also a Help tab with quick links to the WordPress support forums and codex on here as well.
More often than not, chances are you will jump into Google and google your problem if you do have one.
And on the left-hand side you have the main Dashboard menu, which will give you access and links to all the areas of your website and this is the default WordPress administration area as well. OK. So we will go through these other sections in the other videos.
